Ferry Street Water Main Project - Grant to Robbins

A new water main is being constructed to ensure water system reliability as the region experiences continued growth. The water main will be installed in the west lane of Ferry Street between Grant Avenue and just south of Robbins Road. Both lanes of Ferry Street will be re-paved. The project is a partnership between Grand Haven Charter Township, the Ottawa County Road Commission, and the City of Grand Haven. The Ottawa County Road Commission is funding the project through the sale of bonds on behalf of Grand Haven Charter Township.

Stage 1 of the Ferry Street Water Main Project will begin on Monday, April 1st, with the temporary closure of the intersection at Ferry Street and Grant Avenue. The intersection is anticipated to re-open to traffic by May 1, 2024. During this timeframe, the intersection will be closed to through traffic. Access will be maintained for residents within the project area. All others will be directed around the project site along Beechtree Street. Please follow the posted detour routes.

The intersection is anticipated to reopen on or before May 1, 2024. At that time, the second stage of the project will begin. The anticipated timeline is as follows:

Stage 1 – Ferry/Grant Intersection, April – May

Stage 2 – Grant Street to Taylor Avenue, May-Mid-Summer

Stage 3 – Taylor Avenue to South of Robbins Road, Mid-Summer – October

May 2, 2024

This week’s project activities:

  • Water main construction began and continues to be installed in the southbound lane of Ferry.
  • Necessary utility replacements and sewer lateral repairs are being made as project activities pass by properties.
  • Dewatering operations and water testing have been ongoing and will continue throughout the project.
  • The intersection of Colfax/Ferry has been graveled, and traffic may travel through the intersection to US-31.

Anticipated Upcoming Work: Water transmission main construction will continue, and completed areas will be backfilled and graveled. Any necessary utility and sewer lateral repairs will continue to occur within the project limits before base course paving occurs. The contractor is currently expecting to base course pave the first few blocks of the Second Phase the week of May 13th.

Access to Properties: As the project continues moving south, property access will be impacted, but the contractor is doing as much as possible to keep driveway access open. While construction occurs directly in front of your block, you are encouraged to park on side streets during the daytime. If you need to come and go throughout the workday, park your vehicle(s) outside the block where construction occurs. Access to your driveway will be available once project activity stops each day. The contractor intends to work block-by-block within each phase to limit the disruption to residents and businesses as they head south. Access will be restricted during construction hours in the block where construction crews work.

For those outside the immediate work zone, you’ll be able to maintain access to your home or business.

This week’s project activities:

  • Base course paving occurred at the Grant Street intersection and was reopened to traffic. The Grant Street detour route will be removed shortly, but vehicles may now utilize the intersection.
  • Curb, gutter, and driveway removals were completed on the southbound lane from Grant Street to Taylor.
  • Dewatering operations and water testing have been ongoing and will continue throughout the project.
  • Excavation of the southbound lane began, and water main construction will start at the end of the week.

Anticipated Upcoming Work: Water transmission main construction will continue, and completed areas will be backfilled and graveled. Any necessary utility and sewer lateral repairs will occur within the project limits before base course paving occurs. The contractor is currently expecting to base course pave the first few blocks of the second phase in the second week of May.

You’ll be able to maintain access to your home or business for those outside the immediate work zone.

Traffic Control: Traffic is being restricted on Ferry Street between Grant Street and Taylor. Local-only traffic can move through this area to access homes and businesses. Please continue to be cautious and aware of detour routes.

Site Safety: Thank you to all the residents for their attention to safety as you drive and/or navigate the sidewalks to and from your homes. Please continue to stay observant and clear of construction equipment and excavations on the project site.

This week’s project activities:

  • Backfill excavation continued, and the intersection was prepared for the aggregate base. This area of the intersection is now gravel; however, access is still being restricted while the transition to the next phase begins. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, and we are working diligently to minimize the disruption to your daily routines.
  • The west lane of Ferry between Grant and Taylor will be milled on Friday, April 19th. This portion of Ferry Street will be closed to traffic during this timeframe. Milling will begin after the morning rush and conclude before school lets out in the afternoon. During this timeframe, please be mindful of larger-than-normal trucks traveling southbound on Ferry Street from Jackson Street to Robbins Road. Once milling is completed, local-only traffic may resume that same day. Intersections will re-open to traffic.
  • Also, on Friday, April 19th, curb and gutter removal will begin south of Grant and up to Taylor Avenue.

The anticipated upcoming construction schedule is outlined below:

Week of April 22nd: On Tuesday, April 23rd, the Grant and Ferry intersection will be paved and reopened to traffic. The detour established for the Grant Avenue closure will also be removed. Provided the weather cooperates and construction activities go as planned, the intersection at Colfax and Ferry will close to traffic on Wednesday, April 24th: This intersection will not be closed to local traffic for the duration of Phase 2 but will be disrupted while activity is directly occurring.

Access to Properties: Access to homes and businesses is currently being maintained. During Phase 2, driveway access may sometimes be limited to your property. During those times, please park your vehicle outside the immediate construction area. Access to your driveway will be available once project activity stops each day. The contractor intends to work block-by-block within each phase to limit the disruption to residents and businesses as they head south. Access will be restricted during construction hours in the block where construction crews work.

Traffic Control: Traffic on Ferry Street continues to be closed at Grant Street. Local traffic to homes and businesses has been maintained. Please continue to be cautious and aware of detour routes. Please be sure to use caution and be very observant when driving around the project area.

Site Safety: No accidents have been reported again this week. Thank you to all the residents for their attention to safety as you drive to and from your homes. Please be cautious when traveling in and around the construction zone. Stay clear of construction equipment and excavations on the project site.

April 11, 2024

This week’s project activities:

  • Water main tie-in was constructed and pressurized. During pressurization, a minuscule and uncharacteristic part defect was found. Luckily, McCormick Sand was able to locate and expedite a replacement part. This resulted in a minor schedule impact but not a significant setback.
  • The anchor wall was formed and poured.
  • Backfilling operations have started at the Grant Avenue intersection and will continue tomorrow into early next week.

The anticipated construction schedule is outlined below:

Week of April 15th: We will continue with backfill excavation and prepare the intersection for the aggregate base. These activities are expected to conclude by mid-next week. McCormick Sand will then transition into Stage 2 (south of the Grant intersection up to Taylor Avenue), with the west lane being milled and prepared for removal around April 19th. As this transition occurs and work is completed at Grant Street, you will notice changes in the detour routes. Please refer to the attached detour for more information.

Week of April 22nd:  An obsolete gas main will be removed just ahead of McCormick Sand’s water transmission main construction in Phase 2. It is the City’s policy that all obsolete utilities are removed at the time of an infrastructure project when it is exposed. We anticipate the intersection at Colfax to be temporarily closed around April 25th. This intersection will not be closed to local traffic for the duration of Phase 2 but may be disrupted while activity is directly occurring in the intersection. We will do our best to communicate updates on a timely basis, but please adhere to detour routes.

Access to Properties: Access to homes and businesses is currently being maintained. In future project phases, driveway access may sometimes be limited to your property. During those times, the contractor will coordinate an alternate parking location, and you will be provided with where to park your vehicle.
