City Council

The council exercises all of the legislative and policymaking powers of the city and consists of five members, one of whom is the mayor. The term of office of the mayor is two years and four years for each council member, except in the case of appointments to fill vacancies. 

The council meets in regular session, twice in each calendar month in the Council Chambers of Grand Haven City Hall, 519 Washington Avenue, Grand Haven, MI 49417. Special meetings may be called by the mayor, the city manager, or any two members of council, with at least 18 hours notice. 

The mayor is recognized as the executive head of the city and presides over all meetings of the council. The mayor has an equal voice and vote with other members of the council. Mayor Roger Bergman was reelected to office in 2005 and has served on council since 1999. In addition, he has served two years on the CBDDA, from 1986-1988. Mayor Bergman has been a resident of Grand Haven since 1980. He was born and raised in Holland, Michigan, where he attended Hope College. He has been in the retail business since 1966 and owns and operates Borr's Bootery in downtown Grand Haven. Mayor Bergman and his wife, Karen, have two children, Nick and Bryce.

Councilmember Michael Fritz was elected to office in 2003. He was born in Grand Haven and has been a life-long resident. His interests and hobbies include baseball and classic and street rod automobiles, which he turned into an auto repair business with his brother in 1982. He and his wife, Janice, have three children, Patrick, Amanda and Michelle.

Councilmember Geri McCaleb was reelected to office in 2005 and has served on City Council since 2001. She was born in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, but has lived in Grand Haven most of her life. Her interests are wide and varied, but at the top of the list are her family, the outdoors, sewing and the community in which she lives. She and her husband, John, have been married for 22 years and have two children, Alisha and Matt. 

Councilmember John Naser was elected to office in 2005. He previously served on City Council from 1996 to 2001 and on the Planning Commission from 1991 to 1996. He and his wife, Sharon, have four children, Jeff, Rebecca, Missy, and Jenny.

Councilmember Edward Nieuwenhuis was elected to office in 2003. He has been a resident of Grand Haven for 26 years and has previously served on the Planning Commission. He retired from Meijer, Inc. after 30 years as the vice-president of logistics & customer service. He and his wife, Sandy, have been married for 45 years and have three children; Michelle, Jason and Luke; and nine grand children.
